Minutes of the Biotechnology Secretariat Meeting, April 7, 2002
Orlando, Florida
The meeting opened with a welcome from the Secretary-General and a call to order at 7:11 AM. The daylight savings time was felt by all and is reflected in the 10 minutes delay in the starting time as some members arrived a few minutes late.
The minutes of the San Diego meeting were approved as presented.
The Treasurer's report was given by the Secretary-Treasurer, Graham Swift, and referenced back to the website where it is posted. The report was accepted as presented.
Graham Swift also indicated that the Annual Report of the Secretariat had been filed with the ACS and acknowledged. Feedback is expected before the fall meeting in Boston where it will be discussed.
There was no report on the website as our Webmaster was not in attendance. However, everyone was advised that the website contains all the information on the Secretariat, programs, minutes, financials, etc. Good reading!
The programming for the fall meeting in Boston, Biotechnology for a Sustainable Environment, is now closed. David Kaplan, the lead organizer, was not in attendance. Updates will be found on the website as soon as the program is assembled and posted.
Jim DiBattista, BMGT, attended the meeting to enlist our support for the their proposed Biotechnology Fair at the Boston Meeting. This will be a one-day program open to all attendees at the meeting. There will be a charge for presenters of technology seeking capital support for their programs. The intention is to make this type of program a major event at all future ACS Meetings. The locality will define the focus of the fair. The Secretariat committee members voted to lend support and to publicize the event.
Future meetings in the planning stage were briefly discussed:
Sharon Vercellotti who will organize the New Orleans meeting in the spring of 2003 agreed to attend the P2C2 meeting this fall for program chairs.
Guenter indicated that the fall meeting would also be the election of officers for the Secretariat for 2003. If anyone has nominations for Secretary-General or the Secretary-Treasurer, please notify Guenter or Graham.
John Galiotos, Dept. Chair, Houston Community College System attended the last few minutes of the meeting to ask how the students in biotechnology could participate in the Secretariat. Guenter agreed to discuss this outside the meeting.
Business concluded, the call for adjournment was accepted at 8:40 AM.
Respectfully,
Graham Swift
Secretary-Treasurer
