Minutes of the Biotechnology Secretariat Meeting, August 18, 2002

Secretary-General Guenter Grethe called the meeting to order at 7:05 AM. The proposed Agenda was accepted.

The minutes of the last committee meeting in Orlando Florida as published on the website were accepted.

The treasurer's report indicated a current balance of $7679.77 with several divisions still to pay their 2002 dues. The report was accepted as presented and will now be posted on the web. The treasurer will send out second invoices after Labor Day to the divisions not yet up to date.

Andy Berks reported on Electronic and Separate abstracts. After discussions, the consensus was to have both separates and electronic abstracts at all meetings, if possible.

The Boston program, "Biotechnology for a Sustainable Environment" has several section including Biopolymer Engineering, Bioinformatics, Green Chemistry, Molecular Iterations in Bioprocessing, Enzymes in Organic and Polymer Chemistry, Advances in Biocatalysis, Self-Assembly, ands Renewable Resources. The program, though, only had participation from PMSE, BIOT, and CARB.

Jim DiBattista did not attend the meeting so there was no report on the Technology Fair for new technologies to be held as a new venture by the Small Chemical Business Division in Boston.

Sharon Vercellotti's program for New Orleans in the spring of 2003 is well organized and moving forward with great gusto. Sharon is clearly on top of it and will attend the P2C2 meeting in Chicago this fall. The program, "Biotechnology in the Service of Health" already has support and participation from several divisions AGFD, BIOT, CELL, CINF, CHAL, MEDI, SCMB, CARB, and NUCL. Other divisions with invites and no responses yet are ANYL and CHED.

The program for Philadelphia in the fall of 2004, chaired by John Kozarich, "Genomics and Proteomics for the Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Food Industries" is just taking shape. The Secretary will forward the program to member divisions this fall for acceptance and support.

San Diego in the spring of 2005 has a tentative program, Biological Chemistry in Extreme Environments" but no chair at this time. Michael Adams and Robert Kelly have expressed interest. This program will also be circulated to divisional members for approval.

Several topics were considered for the San Francisco meeting in the fall of 2006. These included System Biology, Biosafety & Security, Diagnostic Technologies, and Sensing Technologies. After some discussion the committee decided on the broader topic "Biosensors". A program chair has still to be selected. The planned title will also be circulated to divisional members for approval.

The 2007 ACS National Meetings are scheduled for Chicago (Spring) and Boston (Fall). The committee decided to plan for the Fall meeting in Boston with a tentative program about nanotechnologies. Buddy Ratner expressed interest in organizing this symposium.

A call for nominations for Secretary-General and Secretary-Treasurer in 2003 resulted in re-nomination of the present incumbents, Guenter Grethe and Graham Swift, respectively. Both agreed to serve for on more term.

ACS Reviewers of the 2001 Secretariat Annual Report gave the Secretariat very good marks. They consider the Secretariat well-organized and very active with excellent and timely programming and a sound financial structure. It was suggested to list the divisions that actively participate in a given program and to share our ideas with other Secretariats.

To help with future programming it was suggested to place all past program titles on the Secretariat's website. Fred Heineken will provide the titles to the webmaster Andy Berks.

The meeting was closed at 8:11 AM.

Respectfully,

Graham Swift

Secretary-Treasurer
